What is a Naturopathic Doctor?
Naturopathic Doctors are the only physician level specialists in Natural Medicine. Naturopathic doctors in North America are trained to diagnose and treat all medical conditions by identifying and removing the causes of a disease and using natural, non-toxic therapies to restore health. Our primary goal, as your natural medicine expert, is to not only treat your condition, but also maximize your health.
What is the Education of a Naturopathic Doctor?
Naturopathic physicians undergo training that is similar in structure and scope to that of medical and osteopathic doctors. Naturopathic medical colleges are four-year graduate schools. ND’s are trained in medical sciences including anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, pharmacology, cardiology, neurology, radiology, minor surgery, obstetrics, gynecology, embryology, pediatrics, psychology, pharmacology, minor surgery, dermatology, and clinical and physical diagnosis. The training also includes extensive study of naturopathic philosophy and therapeutics including clinical & therapeutic nutrition, botanical medicine, homeopathy, hydrotherapy, manipulative therapy, and counseling. Because coursework in natural therapeutics is added to a standard medical curriculum, naturopathic doctors often receive significantly more hours of classroom education in these areas than the graduates of many leading medical schools. It requires that graduates of naturopathic medical schools in the US pass rigorous national and state board examinations in order to qualify for a license. There are currently five accredited naturopathic medical schools in the United States and two in Canada.
What Treatments Do Naturopathic Doctors use?
Naturopathic Doctors are trained to utilize many different forms of treatments depending upon what each patient needs. The most frequently used treatments include herbal medicine, nutrition and diet modification, dietary supplements, homeopathy, hydrotherapy, cranial and spinal alignment, counseling and lifestyle changes. When these therapies are used appropriately they are generally safer, less toxic, and have much fewer side effects than prescription medications. Although ND’s are trained for Prescription rights in the US, We do not provide any prescription medications in Singapore in order to abide by the MOH regulations. If there is a need, we will refer out to our trusted Medical doctors outside the clinic.
Will I Have to Stop Seeing My M.D. if I See a Naturopathic Doctor?
Not if you don’t want to. Many patients see us either for primary health care or for supportive care. We welcome the opportunity to collaborate with any or all of your other providers.
Are Naturopathic Treatments Scientific?
The treatments recommended are based on examinations of each patient’s anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry. We make every effort to use therapies with documented scientific efficacy or a long history of clinical safety and efficacy. Many of the therapies used in our clinic have been subjected to controlled scientific studies. Each of the products dispensed come from reputable companies that carry physician grade supplements subject to independent lab testing for safety and accuracy.
Why Should I see a Naturopathic Doctor When They Sell Vitamins and Herbs at the Health Food Store?
For many people the multitude of nutritional and botanical supplements over the counter can be overwhelming. It can become an enormous expense to purchase several supplements when you are trying to self-treat. And not all supplement companies are the same. The source and quality of a supplement is instrumental to its safety and efficacy. It can also be inappropriate and possibly dangerous to receive medical advice from people who are not adequately trained even when their intentions are good. People are often hoping their doctors can help guide them on which natural products are best for them. When you consult with a Naturopathic doctor you are getting a physician level expert on natural supplements specific to your needs.
If I See a Naturopathic Doctor Will I End Up Taking a Bunch of Pills Everyday?
Generally No. In most cases when you are addressing the underlying causes rather than treating each symptom the number of supplements to correct the imbalance is minimal. For severely ill patients it often requires a more comprehensive intervention initially. Dr. Kamat is very mindful of the expense of consistent supplementation as well as the hassle that can be associated with a daily regimen. She works with each patient to determine the most effective and realistic treatment plan. This also includes the use of powders and liquids that are more easily administered to children and some adults
Will I Have to Stop Taking My Prescription Medication?
Not if you don’t want to. Many people today are concerned about the costs and side effects of pharmaceuticals but are not aware of other options. In many cases there are natural therapies that can replace or decrease the need for prescription medication. Should you decide you would like an alternative approach to treating your condition, Dr. Kamat can work with you to correct the problem and safely wean you off of the medication. We never recommend stopping a medication on your own and are happy to collaborate with your other doctors to meet your health goals.
